Category: Network Monitoring (RMON), Vendor: Cabletron/Enterasys
Description: Extends RMON with Cabletron-specific statistics, history groups, and extended alarm and event capabilities.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CTRMONXT-MIB?
CTRMONXT-MIB is a Cabletron Networks RMON extension MIB that augments the standard RFC 1757 RMON groups with vendor-specific statistics, history, alarm, and event capabilities, plus network-layer host/protocol discovery. Its exposed data spans automatic network-discovery configuration (ctDiscoveryControlTable) and discovered-node/protocol tables (ctDiscoveryMNTable) that classify hosts by protocol type such as IP or Novell NetWare (ctProtIP, ctProtNetware). While its core purpose is traffic/discovery statistics rather than device hardware health, it does let an operator monitor the health of the discovery/monitoring subsystem itself - control-table status, aging interval, and how many stations/protocols have been learned on the segment - which reflects whether the RMON probe/agent function is operating correctly. It explicitly extends and depends on the standard RMON MIB (RFC 1757), building its discovery and extended-alarm features on top of that base. It is deployed on Cabletron/Enterasys switches or RMON probes used for traffic analysis and automated network/host discovery. Engineers can download the CTRMONXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CTRMONXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cabletron/Enterasys switch or RMON probe
Monitoring Examples
An admin would poll ctDiscoveryControlTable/ctDiscoveryControlEntry (indexed by ctDiscoveryControlIndex) to check ctDiscoveryControlStatus and ctDiscoveryControlLastDeleteTime, confirming the discovery process is actively running and aging out stale entries per ctDiscoveryControlAgeInterval. Querying ctDiscoveryMNTable/ctDiscoveryMNEntry together with ctDiscoveryProtocol, ctProtIP, and ctProtNetware would reveal which network-layer protocols are active on a monitored segment, useful for spotting unexpected legacy protocol traffic on a link. ctDiscoveryControlTableSize bounds how many discovered entries the probe retains before aging them out.
What Can Be Monitored
- discovery control status
- discovery aging interval
- discovered node/protocol table
- active network-layer protocols (IP, NetWare)
- discovery table size/utilization
