Category: Domain: System Management

Description: Generic common MIB providing shared data types, textual conventions, and base object definitions reused across a vendor's product line.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is COMMON-MIB?

COMMON-MIB is a generic, vendor-supplied module that defines shared textual conventions, data types, and base object definitions intended to be imported and reused by other MIB modules within the same vendor's product line, rather than exposing its own runtime instrumentation. Because it is a foundational/definitional module, it typically does not directly expose device-specific data categories like interfaces or environmental sensors itself; instead it supplies the common building blocks (types, enumerations, textual conventions) that those other MIBs use to describe such data consistently. As such, it has little to no direct role in monitoring hardware or software status on its own; its value is indirect, ensuring consistent representation of status/type values across the vendor's other MIBs. Its purpose is inherently dependency-oriented: virtually every other module in the same vendor's MIB set may import definitions from it. It is typically encountered as a supporting/imported module loaded alongside a vendor's product-specific MIBs, as is characteristic of the COMMON-MIB MIB, rather than deployed or polled on its own.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in COMMON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Marconi (FORE Systems) ATM switching platform — shared textual-conventions module, identified via enterprise OID 326 (FORE Systems, acquired by Marconi in 2001)

Monitoring Examples

No module description or sample objects were provided for this MIB, and as a shared definitions module it would not contain pollable runtime instrumentation of its own; any monitoring occurs through the vendor-specific MIBs that import its types, not through COMMON-MIB directly.
