Category: Domain: System Management

Description: Carnegie Mellon University experimental MIB providing early SNMP management objects for host and network resource monitoring.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CMU-MIB?

The CMU-MIB is an early, historical experimental SNMP MIB developed at Carnegie Mellon University during the formative period of SNMP, predating many later IETF standard MIBs. No module description or sample objects were available for this entry, reflecting that it is a legacy/experimental module rarely deployed today, but historically it defined objects for basic host and network resource visibility on the university's early TCP/IP hosts. As an experimental precursor, it would have offered rudimentary monitoring of host software status such as running processes or system load in the spirit of the later HOST-RESOURCES-MIB. It is understood to be an ancestor/influence on subsequent IETF host and system MIBs rather than something with an active dependency relationship today. It would typically be found only in SNMP MIB archives/history collections rather than in active production deployments. Engineers can download the CMU-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CMU-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-era experimental MIB; historically used on Unix/TCP-IP hosts, not tied to a specific manufacturer

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were provided for this MIB, and detailed object names could not be confirmed from the source, so a concrete polling scenario cannot be responsibly constructed without inventing plausible-sounding names not grounded in the actual module.

RFC description

Enterprise OID definitions root MIB used as a reference baseline for assigning enterprise identifiers to network vendors.
