Description: Disk management MIB providing objects for monitoring disk drive status, capacity, I/O performance, and health indicators.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DISK-MIB?

DISK-MIB (deviceDiskMIB) is a MIB dedicated to monitoring the physical disk drives installed in a managed device, exposing per-disk identity, health status, and basic capacity/geometry information. It is a vendor-neutral-style device MIB in structure, built around a single disk value table rather than a large enterprise tree, and is commonly embedded by hardware vendors (e.g., NAS, storage appliance, or embedded system manufacturers) into their device agents. Its core purpose is hardware status monitoring: deviceDiskStatus reports the operational/health state of each disk (e.g., normal, degraded, failed), deviceDiskTrapEnabled controls whether status changes generate SNMP traps, and deviceDiskVendor/deviceDiskProduct/deviceDiskSerialN identify the specific physical drive for inventory and failure-correlation purposes. There is no indication of dependency on external standard MIBs; it functions as a self-contained disk health module, likely referenced by a device's broader hardware-monitoring MIB alongside CPU, memory, and power objects. It is typically deployed in storage appliances, NAS devices, or servers where disk health needs to be tracked via SNMP to catch failing drives before data loss occurs. Engineers can download the DISK-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DISK-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • storage appliance/NAS device
  • server with SNMP-managed disk drives

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll the deviceDiskValueTable, using deviceDiskIndex to enumerate installed drives, and check deviceDiskStatus alongside deviceDiskTimeStamp to see if any disk has recently transitioned to a degraded or failed state. Correlating a failure alert with deviceDiskVendor, deviceDiskProduct, and deviceDiskSerialN would let the operator identify the exact physical drive to replace, while deviceDiskMIBNotifications would deliver a trap the moment deviceDiskStatus changes, enabling proactive replacement before an array loses redundancy.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-disk operational/health status
  • disk vendor/product/serial identification
  • disk block size and block count (capacity)
  • disk status change timestamp
  • disk status trap enable/disable
