Description: Configures Telnet server access controls and session limits on Cisco Small Business managed switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCOSB-TELNET-MIB?
This is a Cisco Small Business proprietary MIB governing Telnet remote-access management on their managed switch line. It exposes configuration objects (password, idle timeout, login banners) as well as an operational table of currently logged-in Telnet users showing session ID, client address, and login time. Though primarily a security/access-control MIB rather than a hardware-health MIB, it does let an operator monitor software/service status in the sense of active management sessions - how many users are logged in, from where, and for how long - which is useful for detecting unauthorized or stale sessions. It is a self-contained proprietary MIB with no significant dependency on other standard MIBs beyond basic SNMPv2-SMI conventions. It is deployed on Cisco Small Business switches (Sx200/300/500 series) wherever administrators need to audit or restrict Telnet-based CLI access. Engineers can download the CISCOSB-TELNET-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCOSB-TELNET-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco Small Business managed switch
Monitoring Examples
Polling rlTelnetUsersTable returns one rlTelnetUsersEntry per active session, with rlTelnetSessionClientAddressType/rlTelnetSessionClientAddress identifying the connecting host and rlTelnetSessionLoginTime showing session age; an admin could use this to spot a session left open far longer than expected or a login from an unexpected IP. rlTelnetSessionStatus reflects whether a session is active or invalid, useful for confirming forced logouts took effect. rlTelnetTimeout and rlTelnetLoginBanner/rlTelnetSecondLoginBanner are configuration items an admin verifies match intended security policy.
What Can Be Monitored
- active Telnet session count
- session client IP address
- session login time/duration
- session status
- configured idle timeout
- login banner text
