Description: Manages Cisco Small Business IP SLA probes for network performance measurement and availability testing.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCOSB-IP-SLA?

CISCOSB-IP-SLA is a private Cisco Small Business MIB for configuring and reporting IP Service Level Agreement (SLA) probes, synthetic network tests that measure round-trip performance and reachability to a target address, on small-business routers and switches. It exposes a table of SLA operations covering operation type, administrative state, timeout, polling frequency, request payload size, destination address, and the last operation's return code. Its core monitoring value is direct: the return-code object reports whether the most recent probe succeeded or failed, letting an administrator detect loss of reachability or degraded performance to a critical destination before end users notice an outage. It is a vendor-private analog to the IETF DISMAN-PING-MIB/IP SLA framework and does not formally depend on other standard MIBs, though it mirrors the concepts of Cisco's larger IP SLA MIB used on enterprise IOS platforms. It is deployed on Cisco Small Business routers/switches to provide lightweight active-monitoring probes for WAN or uplink health. Engineers can download the CISCOSB-IP-SLA file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCOSB-IP-SLA. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Small Business router
  • Cisco Small Business switch

Monitoring Examples

Polling rlSLAOperTable/rlSLAOperEntry, keyed by rlSLAOperId, shows each configured probe's rlSLAOperType, rlSLAOperDestAddr, and rlSLAOperFrequency; a probe whose rlSLAOperReturnCode suddenly changes from success to a timeout/failure code indicates a reachability problem to rlSLAOperDestAddr. rlSLAOperState confirms whether the operation is actively running, and rlSLAOperTimeout/rlSLAOperReqDataSize let an operator tune sensitivity for jitter-prone links. This gives an early warning of WAN degradation ahead of full outage reports.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SLA probe return code (success/failure)
  • probe destination reachability
  • probe operation state
  • polling frequency and timeout settings
