What Is CISCOSB-HWENVIROMENT?

CISCOSB-HWENVIROMENT is a Cisco Small Business private MIB dedicated to physical environmental monitoring of the switch chassis, covering fan and power-supply status. It exposes per-fan and per-power-supply tables describing each unit's index, textual description, operational state, and for power supplies, the power source and cooling-fan direction. This is squarely a hardware-health MIB: it is used to detect fan failures, degraded cooling, and power-supply faults or loss of redundancy before they cause a thermal shutdown or unexpected outage. It has no significant cross-MIB dependency beyond the shared CISCOSB private-enterprise numbering, though it complements the standard ENTITY-MIB's physical inventory model. It is deployed wherever CISCOSB switches need continuous environmental health checks in wiring closets or small data centers. Engineers can download the CISCOSB-HWENVIROMENT file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

A monitoring system would poll rlEnvMonFanStatusTable/rlEnvMonFanStatusEntry, reading rlEnvMonFanState per rlEnvMonFanStatusIndex to detect a fan reporting a failed or warning state, using rlEnvMonFanStatusDescr to identify which physical fan is affected. Similarly, rlEnvMonSupplyStatusTable's rlEnvMonSupplyState combined with rlEnvMonSupplySource shows whether a power supply has lost input power or is running in a degraded mode. A fan state changing from normal to failed, especially alongside a rising temperature elsewhere in the chassis, is the classic early-warning pattern this MIB is polled to catch.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rlEnvMonSupplySource OID:

Select a Cisco Small Business switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rlEnvMonSupplySource into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The power supply source. unknown - Power supply source unknown ac - AC power supply dc - DC power supply externalPowerSupply - External power supply internalRedundant - Internal redundant power supply. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is 'unknown', or it changes unexpectedly, since which supply is correct depends on your power configuration and an unplanned change often indicates a failover. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
