Description: Manages transaction connection parameters for voice and data transaction processing on Cisco gateway platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-TRANSACTION-CONNECTION-MIB?

CISCO-TRANSACTION-CONNECTION-MIB manages Cisco Transaction Connection, a gateway feature that routes transactions between IBM CICS (Customer Information Control System) mainframe hosts and clients using the SNA-based ISC (Inter-System Communication) protocol. It exposes licensing status, destination/route configuration, and per-destination usage statistics for these mainframe transaction gateway sessions. From a monitoring standpoint it is chiefly useful for software/service health and licensing status: ctcLicenseState and ctcLicenseExpiration reveal whether the feature is currently licensed and active, ctcLicenseCurrConn versus ctcLicenseMaxConn shows connection capacity utilization, and per-destination hit counters (ctcDestinationNumHits) indicate transaction traffic load. It is a self-contained Cisco enterprise MIB with no strong dependency beyond standard SNMPv2 conventions, though it operates alongside SNA/CICS integration concepts defined outside SNMP (in IBM's own protocols). It is deployed on Cisco gateway routers that bridge modern IP networks to legacy IBM CICS mainframe transaction-processing environments. Engineers can download the CISCO-TRANSACTION-CONNECTION-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-TRANSACTION-CONNECTION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco gateway routers running Transaction Connection
  • Cisco IOS devices bridging IP clients to IBM CICS mainframes

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would check ctcLicenseState and ctcLicenseCurrConn against ctcLicenseMaxConn to confirm the Transaction Connection feature is licensed and has headroom for new sessions; a state showing an expired or near-limit license would explain new transactions being rejected. Polling ctcDestinationTable/ctcDestinationEntry gives per-destination detail such as ctcDestinationRemoteLUName, ctcDestinationModeName, and ctcDestinationNumHits, letting an operator see which CICS destination is handling the most transaction volume or has gone unexpectedly idle. ctcRouteTable would be checked to confirm active routing paths between clients and CICS hosts remain configured correctly.

What Can Be Monitored

  • license state and expiration
  • current vs. maximum licensed connections
  • per-destination transaction hit counts
  • destination remote LU name and mode name
  • configured transaction routes

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using ctcLicenseState OID:

Select a Cisco gateway routers running Transaction Connection (legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type ctcLicenseState into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The state of the Transaction Connection license. unconfigured : A license key has not been provided. notValidatedYet : A license key has been provided, but it cannot be validated until a server is created. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is anything other than 'licenseOK', since that indicates the condition this object reports has changed to one worth investigating. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
