What Is CISCO-SWITCH-STATS-MIB?

This Cisco MIB provides detailed, ASIC-level traffic statistics for Cisco switching devices, supplementing standard interface counters with configurable, per-interface statistics buckets. It exposes configuration (which statistics options are defined, via csstConfigStatsOptionTable) alongside performance-counter data (packet and octet counts per interface, per configured option). Its monitoring emphasis is on switch traffic/performance status - throughput, packet counts, and octet counts at a granularity standard IF-MIB counters don't provide - useful for spotting congestion, silent drops, or asymmetric traffic patterns rather than for reporting hardware faults directly. It is expected to be used alongside standard interface indexing conventions from IF-MIB. Typical deployment is on Catalyst switches where an operator needs finer-grained, configurable traffic accounting per port than plain interface counters offer, making CISCO-SWITCH-STATS-MIB SNMP monitoring valuable for spotting congestion and silent drops.

csstConfigStatsOptionTable/csstConfigStatsOptionEntry, indexed by csstConfigStatsOptionIndex and described by csstConfigStatsOptionDesc, defines which traffic statistic buckets are active; csstConfigStatsIfTable/csstConfigStatsIfEntry then exposes csstConfigStatsIfPackets1/csstConfigStatsIfOctets1 and a second bucket csstConfigStatsIfPackets2/csstConfigStatsIfOctets2 per interface. An admin could configure one bucket to count forwarded traffic and another to count drops, then poll both per interface to spot a port silently discarding traffic under an active QoS or ACL policy.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using csstConfigStatsIfPackets1 OID:

Select a Cisco Catalyst switch (traffic statistics) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type csstConfigStatsIfPackets1 into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The total number of packets counted on this interface for the traffic statistics option that is specified by the first octet value of the csstConfigStatsMap object. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in packets), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
