Category: Cisco Devices, Hardware and Environment, SNMP Framework

Description: Declares agent capabilities for switch stacking management on Cisco Catalyst and similar stackable switch platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-STACK-CAPABILITY?

CISCO-STACK-CAPABILITY is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES module declaring which objects of CISCO-STACK-MIB a given Cisco stackable switch's SNMP agent implements, covering switch-stack membership and management features. It belongs to Cisco's Catalyst switch-stacking product area, where multiple physical switches are joined into a single logically managed unit. As a capability module it defines no monitoring data of its own; it documents which CISCO-STACK-MIB stack-member and stack-topology objects a particular platform supports, guiding network management systems on which OIDs are safe to poll for stack health. It is entirely dependent on its companion CISCO-STACK-MIB, whose objects it profiles. It applies to Cisco Catalyst and other stackable switch platforms, and is consumed by NMS discovery logic rather than used for direct hardware/software status checks. Engineers can download the CISCO-STACK-CAPABILITY file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-STACK-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Catalyst stackable switches

Monitoring Examples

A management system discovering a Catalyst switch stack would read this capability module to confirm support for CISCO-STACK-MIB's stack-member and stack-port tables before polling them for stack topology and member status. Since this module defines no objects itself, there is no direct data to sample; it only gates whether polling of CISCO-STACK-MIB will return meaningful results on that device. This avoids an NMS mistakenly assuming stack-related OIDs are available on non-stacking-capable Cisco platforms.

What Can Be Monitored

  • CISCO-STACK-MIB object support level
  • stack member/topology object support
  • stack conformance group support
