Description: Declares agent capability statements for SNMP notification (trap/inform) management MIB on Cisco platforms.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-SNMP-NOTIFICATION-CAPABILITY?
CISCO-SNMP-NOTIFICATION-CAPABILITY is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES module that declares which objects of the standard SNMP-NOTIFICATION-MIB (RFC 3413) a Cisco device's SNMP agent implements, covering the configuration of notification (trap/inform) originators and filters. It relates to the SNMP notification-dispatch subsystem rather than any particular hardware component, describing support for objects that control which targets receive traps and under what filtering conditions. Being a capability-declaration module, it exposes no live status counters; its role is to inform management systems which notification-management objects are safe to configure or read on that agent. It is entirely dependent on the IETF SNMP-NOTIFICATION-MIB standard that it profiles. It is used generically across Cisco devices that support configurable SNMP trap/inform delivery, and NMS tools performing capability discovery consult the CISCO-SNMP-NOTIFICATION-CAPABILITY MIB rather than relying solely on direct hardware/software health checks.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-SNMP-NOTIFICATION-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer (applies to Cisco devices supporting configurable SNMP notifications)
Monitoring Examples
A management station configuring trap destinations would consult this capability module to confirm whether a Cisco agent fully supports the snmpNotifyTable and snmpNotifyFilterTable objects from SNMP-NOTIFICATION-MIB before attempting to add or modify notification targets. Since it defines no objects itself, there is nothing to poll directly here; it instead gates whether configuration of trap/inform recipients via SNMP-NOTIFICATION-MIB will be accepted. This prevents an NMS from writing to notification-configuration OIDs that the specific Cisco platform doesn't actually implement.
What Can Be Monitored
- SNMP-NOTIFICATION-MIB object support level
- notify table configuration support
- notify filter profile support
