Description: Declares agent capability statements for SNMP Message Processing and Dispatching (MPD) subsystem on Cisco devices.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-SNMP-MPD-CAPABILITY?
CISCO-SNMP-MPD-CAPABILITY is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES module declaring which objects of the standard SNMP-MPD-MIB (RFC 3412, the SNMPv3 Message Processing and Dispatching subsystem) are implemented on a given Cisco device's SNMP agent. It is not tied to any specific hardware feature but to the SNMP engine itself, describing support for message-processing statistics such as error and discard counters within the SNMPv3 architecture. As a capability module it carries no live monitoring data of its own; its value is in telling network management systems which SNMP-MPD-MIB counters that Cisco's agent actually exposes. It directly depends on the IETF standard SNMP-MPD-MIB, since it is purely a conformance statement for that MIB. It applies generically across Cisco devices running SNMPv3, used by NMS tooling during capability discovery rather than for direct operational health monitoring. Engineers can download the CISCO-SNMP-MPD-CAPABILITY file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-SNMP-MPD-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer (applies to Cisco devices running an SNMPv3 agent)
Monitoring Examples
A network management system performing capability negotiation would read this module to determine whether a Cisco agent supports the full snmpMPDGroup of SNMP-MPD-MIB, including counters like snmpUnknownSNMPIDs or snmpInvalidMsgs, before relying on those OIDs for SNMPv3 diagnostics. Since it defines no objects of its own, there is no direct table to poll; instead it governs whether polling of SNMP-MPD-MIB's statistics will succeed. This helps avoid futile SNMP requests against unsupported message-processing counters on a given Cisco platform.
What Can Be Monitored
- SNMP-MPD-MIB object support level
- message-processing error counter availability
- SNMPv3 agent conformance group support
