Category: Cisco Devices, Network Interfaces, VLAN and Bridging

Description: Manages port tracking to bring down dependent interfaces when tracked uplink ports fail on Cisco switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-PORT-TRACK-MIB?

CISCO-PORT-TRACK-MIB is a Cisco Systems proprietary MIB configuring the Port-Track feature, which propagates a link failure to dependent ports so that end devices attached to a switch are notified of an indirect (upstream) outage rather than only a directly-attached one. Its port-track table maps a tracked (upstream) port to the linked (dependent) port it should force-shut when the tracked link fails, including VSAN scoping for Fibre Channel deployments, alongside a force-shut status table. As a configuration/hardware-status MIB it lets an administrator confirm which ports are configured to shut down in response to an upstream link failure and check whether that force-shut is currently active. It is deployed on Cisco switches (including MDS Fibre Channel switches) using Port-Track for fast failure propagation. Engineers can download the CISCO-PORT-TRACK-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-PORT-TRACK-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco switches (including MDS Fibre Channel switches) using Port-Track

Monitoring Examples

An administrator checks cptPortTrackTable to confirm a dependent port is correctly mapped to its tracked upstream link, then verifies cptPortForceState during an upstream outage to confirm the dependent port was force-shut as designed.

What Can Be Monitored

  • tracked-to-dependent port mapping
  • force-shut status
