Category: Cisco Devices, Network Monitoring (RMON)

Description: Monitors performance counters for interfaces and services on Cisco optical and carrier Ethernet platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-PMON-MIB?

CISCO-PMON-MIB is a Cisco-specific MIB that provides port monitoring information for Cisco optical and carrier Ethernet platforms, grouping performance statistics by logical port groups rather than single interfaces. It exposes performance-counter data: grouped port statistics keyed by a port group index and statistics type, with each entry tying a set of interfaces (via an interface index list) to a specific statistic value. In monitoring terms it is used mainly for tracking interface- and service-level performance counters across aggregated port groups, helping detect throughput degradation, error accumulation, or abnormal traffic patterns on carrier Ethernet or optical transport ports rather than reporting classic hardware health like temperature or power supply status. It relies on IF-MIB-style interface indexing (via ciscoPmonPortGroupIfIndexList) to correlate port groups back to standard interface objects, and it also defines its own notification, compliance, and group conformance structure. It is typically deployed on Cisco carrier Ethernet switches and optical transport platforms, where CISCO-PMON-MIB SNMP monitoring provides the per-port-group performance visibility needed for SLA and capacity management.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-PMON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco optical transport platform
  • Cisco carrier Ethernet switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll the ciscoPmonPortGroupStatsTable, indexed by ciscoPmonPortGroupIndex and ciscoPmonPortGroupStatsType, to retrieve ciscoPmonPortGroupStatsValue for a group of interfaces identified in ciscoPmonPortGroupIfIndexList. A sudden spike in a statistic type such as an error or discard counter across the group would reveal an emerging problem affecting all interfaces sharing that port group, such as a shared uplink or optical module fault. The ciscoPmonMIBNotifs objects could also be checked for related threshold-crossing notifications tied to this data.

What Can Be Monitored

  • port group performance statistics
  • per-interface-group counter values
  • aggregated port throughput/error counters
