Category: Cisco Devices, Network Monitoring (RMON)

Description: Manages packet capture sessions including filters, buffer size, and captured frame retrieval on Cisco devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-PACKET-CAPTURE-MIB?

CISCO-PACKET-CAPTURE-MIB is a Cisco vendor-specific MIB for managing the on-box packet capture feature available on Cisco IOS/IOS-XE and related platforms, letting administrators start, stop, and configure traffic captures directly through SNMP without a separate sniffer. It exposes session-oriented configuration and status data: how many capture sessions are allowed, per-session configuration such as packet length/rate limits and destination capture file name, control actions, and the operational status of each session. It is used to monitor the software-feature status of the device's diagnostic subsystem: the session operational status reveals whether a capture is actively running, stopped, or failed, and the maximum-sessions and configuration-status objects help detect resource limits or misconfiguration preventing a capture from starting. This is a self-contained Cisco feature MIB, though it fits within the broader Cisco embedded packet capture (EPC) diagnostic feature set on the platform. It is typically used by network engineers doing remote, non-intrusive traffic troubleshooting on Cisco routers and switches without needing local CLI or physical access. Engineers can download the CISCO-PACKET-CAPTURE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-PACKET-CAPTURE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco IOS/IOS-XE router or switch

Monitoring Examples

An admin configures a capture via cpcSessionConfigTable, setting cpcSessionPacketLength, cpcSessionPacketLimits, and cpcSessionPacketRateLimit to bound the capture size, then triggers it with cpcSessionAction and polls cpcSessionOperStatus to confirm the session transitioned to a running state. If cpcSessionOperStatus instead shows a failed or inactive state, checking cpcSessionConfigStatus and cpcMaxSessionAllowed reveals whether the session hit a resource limit. cpcSessionDestFileName identifies which capture file, typically on flash or bootflash, holds the captured packets for later retrieval.

What Can Be Monitored

  • packet capture session operational status
  • active/allowed capture session count
  • capture packet length and rate limits
  • capture destination filename
  • session configuration status
