What Is CISCO-MODEM-MGMT-MIB?

CISCO-MODEM-MGMT-MIB manages analog modem pools, call statistics, and line quality on Cisco access server (dial-up) platforms. It exposes system-wide modem inventory and status counters as well as per-group modem configuration, covering how many modems are installed, in use, available, unavailable, or dead. Its monitoring value is squarely hardware/resource status: tracking modem availability and failure counts (cmSystemModemsInUse, cmSystemModemsAvailable, cmSystemModemsUnavailable, cmSystemModemsDead) lets an operator detect capacity exhaustion or failing modem hardware in real time, alongside watchdog and poll timers that govern health-check behavior. It is a Cisco-proprietary MIB with no strong dependency on other standard MIBs beyond general SNMP framework conventions. It is deployed on legacy Cisco access servers (e.g., AS5x00 series) providing dial-in modem pooling for remote access services. Engineers can download the CISCO-MODEM-MGMT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll cmSystemModemsInUse against cmSystemModemsAvailable to determine modem pool utilization and detect capacity exhaustion during peak dial-in hours. A rising cmSystemModemsDead or cmSystemModemsUnavailable count would reveal failing modem hardware needing replacement. cmGroupTable entries let an admin break this down per configured modem group, while cmSystemWatchdogTime and cmSystemStatusPollTime show how frequently the agent refreshes this modem health data.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cmNoCarriers OID:

Select a Cisco access server (dial-up/modem pool, e.g. AS5x00, legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cmNoCarriers into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports a counter that indicates the number of times that the disconnect reason is no carrier. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in calls), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
