Category: Cisco Devices, Network Interfaces, SNMP Framework

Description: Declares agent capability for Cisco extensions to the top-N interface utilization MIB.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-INTERFACETOPN-EXT-CAPABILITY?

CISCO-INTERFACETOPN-EXT-CAPABILITY is a Cisco AGENT-CAPABILITIES conformance module that documents which object groups of the CISCO-INTERFACETOPN-EXT-MIB (Cisco's extended top-N interface utilization MIB) are implemented on a given Cisco platform's SNMP agent. Like other capabilities modules it carries no runtime data of its own; it exists purely to tell a management station what level of top-N interface-utilization reporting to expect from the device. Its relevance to hardware/software monitoring is indirect: it governs whether a management application can rely on the companion MIB to identify the busiest interfaces on a router or switch by traffic volume. It is explicitly dependent on, and only meaningful alongside, the CISCO-INTERFACETOPN-EXT-MIB it describes. It is used during network-management-system integration with Cisco IOS/IOS XE devices rather than for direct day-to-day polling. Engineers can download the CISCO-INTERFACETOPN-EXT-CAPABILITY file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-INTERFACETOPN-EXT-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco IOS/IOS XE routers and switches

Monitoring Examples

This is a conformance/AGENT-CAPABILITIES module with no data objects of its own, so there is no runtime monitoring scenario to report; it only declares the support level for the separate CISCO-INTERFACETOPN-EXT-MIB that carries the actual top-N interface utilization data.

RFC description

A Cisco capability MIB providing extended interface top-N monitoring functionality for Cisco networking devices. This MIB is used for monitoring and reporting on the top performing or most significant interfaces on a network device based on various metrics.

Start monitoring Cisco IOS/IOS XE routers and switches with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
