Description: Extends the IEEE 802.1ag Connectivity Fault Management MIB with Cisco-specific OAM enhancements for Ethernet link monitoring.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-IEEE8021-CFM-EXT-MIB?

CISCO-IEEE8021-CFM-EXT-MIB extends the standard IEEE8021-CFM-MIB and IEEE8021-CFM-V2-MIB with Cisco-specific enhancements for IEEE 802.1ag Connectivity Fault Management (CFM), a protocol for detecting, verifying, and isolating connectivity failures in Ethernet/VLAN bridged networks. It belongs to Cisco's Ethernet OAM (Operations, Administration, Maintenance) product area and exposes configuration for maintenance domains and associations, including multicast addresses used for continuity-check (CC) and linktrace (LTM/LTR) messages, plus fault-alarm enable settings. Its monitoring value centers on link and network fault detection status rather than device hardware, letting operators confirm CFM is actively running and alarming on connectivity faults between maintenance endpoints. It explicitly depends on the IEEE8021-CFM-MIB and IEEE8021-CFM-V2-MIB standards, which it supplements rather than replaces. It is deployed on Cisco Carrier Ethernet switches and routers participating in 802.1ag CFM domains for service-provider and enterprise Ethernet fault management. Engineers can download the CISCO-IEEE8021-CFM-EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-IEEE8021-CFM-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco Carrier Ethernet switches and routers running IEEE 802.1ag CFM

Monitoring Examples

An operator would check ciceCfmEnable and ciceCfmEnableFaultAlarm globally, then inspect ciceCfmMaNetTable/ciceCfmMaNetEntry per maintenance association to confirm ciceCfmMaNetCciEnable (continuity check) is active. Reviewing ciceCfmMaxMdLevel and the configured ciceCfmCcMulticastAddress/ciceCfmLtmMulticastAddress confirms CFM messages are reaching the expected maintenance domain level. cIeeeCfmExtMIBNotifs traps combined with ciceCfmLtrHoldTime/ciceCfmLtrSize settings would reveal a linktrace failure pinpointing where an Ethernet connectivity fault occurred.

What Can Be Monitored

  • CFM enable/fault-alarm status
  • maintenance domain level
  • continuity check enablement per maintenance association
  • CC/LTM multicast address configuration
  • linktrace reply size and hold time
