Category: Cisco Devices, Hardware and Environment, SNMP Framework
Description: Defines SNMP agent capability statements for Cisco Entity Sensor MIB managing environmental sensors on hardware platforms.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-ENTITY-SENSOR-CAPABILITY?
CISCO-ENTITY-SENSOR-CAPABILITY is a Cisco AGENT-CAPABILITIES module that documents which parts of the standards-based CISCO-ENTITY-SENSOR-MIB (itself based on the IETF ENTITY-SENSOR-MIB) a specific Cisco device's SNMP agent actually implements. Rather than exposing its own data objects, it enumerates supported groups, variations, and value ranges for environmental sensor readings such as temperature, voltage, current, and fan-speed sensors defined in the referenced sensor MIB. It is therefore not a source of live monitoring data itself, but a conformance/compatibility declaration that tells NMS tooling what hardware-health sensor telemetry to expect from a given Cisco platform. It explicitly depends on CISCO-ENTITY-SENSOR-MIB (and transitively ENTITY-MIB) for the actual sensor object definitions it describes support for. Such AGENT-CAPABILITIES statements serve as a CISCO-ENTITY-SENSOR-CAPABILITY reference that MIB compilers and NMS platforms typically consult during device onboarding to determine which environmental sensor variables (temperature, power, fan status) a particular Cisco router/switch software release will report.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-ENTITY-SENSOR-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco routers/switches
- conformance module, not a data-bearing MIB
Monitoring Examples
As an AGENT-CAPABILITIES module, CISCO-ENTITY-SENSOR-CAPABILITY defines no runtime tables or counters of its own to poll; it only lists which groups and object variations of CISCO-ENTITY-SENSOR-MIB (e.g. entitySensorValue, entitySensorStatus) are supported on a given Cisco platform/OS version. No monitoring scenario applies here; the actual sensor data would be read from CISCO-ENTITY-SENSOR-MIB, not this capabilities module.
