Category: Cisco Devices, Hardware and Environment, SNMP Framework

Description: Defines SNMP agent capability statements for the Cisco physical entity MIB on supported hardware platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-ENTITY-CAPABILITY?

This is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES conformance module documenting which groups and variations of the standard IETF ENTITY-MIB a given Cisco hardware platform's agent supports. It defines no managed objects itself and carries no runtime hardware inventory data; instead it declares, per Cisco product/software release, how the physical entity table and related ENTITY-MIB groups are implemented. Because it has no data objects, it is not used to monitor uptime, temperature, or component status directly — that is the role of ENTITY-MIB itself (entPhysicalTable and related objects) on devices this module describes. It is entirely dependent on the referenced IETF ENTITY-MIB (RFC 4133 and predecessors). It is used by MIB compilers and NMS platforms to determine ENTITY-MIB feature support across the wide range of Cisco hardware. Engineers can download the CISCO-ENTITY-CAPABILITY file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-ENTITY-CAPABILITY. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco hardware platforms (routers, switches)
  • vendor-specific conformance module, not a data-bearing MIB

Monitoring Examples

As a capabilities-only module it defines no data objects or tables; there is no runtime monitoring scenario to describe. Actual physical inventory and hardware component monitoring (chassis, modules, sensors) would be performed against the standard ENTITY-MIB's entPhysicalTable rather than this capability statement.
