What Is CISCO-CONTENT-ENGINE-MIB?

CISCO-CONTENT-ENGINE-MIB is a Cisco-proprietary module for Cisco Content Engine devices -- web caching and content-delivery appliances that accelerated and offloaded HTTP traffic on enterprise and service-provider networks. Its data is chiefly HTTP proxy-cache performance counters: total requests, cache hits/misses, client and server error counts, blocked requests, bytes served from cache versus origin, and separate hierarchical-caching ("HC") variants of the same counters. As a software/performance-status MIB it lets an operator calculate cache hit ratio and bandwidth savings in real time, and a rising miss or error count quickly flags a caching or upstream-connectivity problem. It sits under the ciscoMgmt enterprise branch (CISCO-SMI) alongside other Cisco service-module MIBs, and is typically browsed together with interface and TCP/IP MIBs when diagnosing a caching appliance's network path. It was deployed on Cisco Content Engine (CE) and Content Delivery Network appliances, mainly in networks built from the late 1990s through the mid-2000s, and engineers researching a cisco content engine deployment today can still download the CISCO-CONTENT-ENGINE-MIB file to inspect its counters in a MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls cceHttpRequestsHits and cceHttpRequestsMisses to compute a live cache hit ratio, and cross-checks cceHttpRequestsBytesServedHits against cceHttpRequestsBytesServedMisses to estimate bandwidth saved by caching. A sudden rise in cceHttpRequestsClientErrorTotal or cceHttpRequestsServerErrorTotal would point to a client-request problem or an origin-server outage respectively.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cceHttpRequestsTotal OID:

Select a Cisco Content Engine web-caching appliance (legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cceHttpRequestsTotal into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the total number of end-user requests the HTTP proxy has received. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
