Category: Cisco Devices, Network Interfaces

Description: Manages circuit-mode network interfaces on Cisco devices, providing configuration and status for dedicated circuit connections.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-CIRCUIT-INTERFACE-MIB?

This Cisco private MIB provides a simple mechanism to attach a human-readable description to individual circuit-oriented interfaces, such as ATM or Frame Relay interfaces, on Cisco routers. It exposes a small configuration table mapping an interface to a free-text description and the row status of that description entry. Its monitoring value is administrative/inventory rather than deep hardware or software health: it lets an operator confirm the correct label is applied to a circuit and that the description entry itself is active, which is useful for auditing and identifying circuits during troubleshooting. It augments the standard IF-MIB (RFC 2863) ifTable, since each circuit description entry is tied to a specific interface's ifIndex. It is deployed on Cisco WAN edge routers carrying many ATM or Frame Relay circuits where clear per-circuit labeling aids operational troubleshooting. Engineers can download the CISCO-CIRCUIT-INTERFACE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-CIRCUIT-INTERFACE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco router with ATM/Frame Relay circuit interfaces

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll cciDescriptionTable/cciDescriptionEntry to read cciDescr, the free-text label (such as a customer or circuit identifier) applied to a given circuit interface, and check cciStatus to confirm that description entry is active. This is useful when auditing a router with many ATM or Frame Relay circuits, where a missing or stale cciDescr value would reveal a circuit that was never properly documented after provisioning.

What Can Be Monitored
