Category: ATM

Description: Manages ATM traffic descriptor profiles and service categories on Cisco ATM devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-ATM-TRAFFIC-MIB?

CISCO-ATM-TRAFFIC-MIB extends the traffic descriptor objects defined in RFC 1695 for ATM devices, adding Cisco-specific service-category and naming information to ATM traffic contracts. It exposes an extended traffic descriptor table capturing the explicit and derived ATM service category (e.g., CBR, VBR, UBR) for a connection along with a human-readable traffic descriptor name. Monitoring-wise, it is used for QoS/traffic-contract configuration verification rather than hardware health—an operator checks atmTrafficExplicitServCategory against atmTrafficDerivedServCategory to confirm a connection is classified and provisioned with the intended service category, which affects how bandwidth and cell loss priority are enforced. It directly depends on and extends the standard ATM-MIB traffic descriptor table from RFC 1695. It is used in legacy carrier/enterprise ATM networks where traffic contracts and service categories needed to be verified for QoS compliance, and the CISCO-ATM-TRAFFIC-MIB MIB remains a useful reference for auditing those legacy QoS configurations.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-ATM-TRAFFIC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco ATM switches

Monitoring Examples

An admin polls atmTrafficDescrParamExtTable/Entry to compare atmTrafficExplicitServCategory (as configured) against atmTrafficDerivedServCategory (as actually derived/enforced by the switch) for a given traffic descriptor identified by atmTrafficDescriptorName. A mismatch between the explicit and derived service category would indicate a misconfigured or incompatible traffic contract that could cause unexpected cell discard or bandwidth allocation on that ATM connection.

What Can Be Monitored

  • ATM traffic descriptor name
  • explicit service category
  • derived service category
