Description: Fore Systems ATM APS (Automatic Protection Switching) group MIB for managing redundant SONET link protection on ForeRunner switches.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is Fore-Apsgroup-MIB?
Fore-Apsgroup-MIB is a Fore Systems enterprise MIB (asx 16, under the atmSwitch/asx branch) for managing SONET Automatic Protection Switching (APS) on ForeRunner ATM switches, covering both individual APS ports and the APS groups that pair a working and protection line. The apsPortTable (indexed by apsBoard, apsModule, apsPort) exposes apsAdminMode (working/protection/unprotected) and apsOperMode (active/standby/loopback states), while the apsGroupTable exposes apsGroupStateCommand/apsGroupLastCommand (clear, lockout, force/manual switch), apsWorkingLineState and apsProtectionLineState (signalFailure/signalDegrade/none), apsGroupMode (uni/bi-directional), the received/transmitted K1K2 byte fields (apsRxK1K2, apsTxK1K2, apsRxChannel, apsTxChannel), and revertive-switching controls (apsRevertMode, apsRevertTimer). It also defines the apsSwitchOver NOTIFICATION-TYPE, tied to Fore-TrapLog-MIB's trapLogIndex, that fires when a protection switchover occurs. This MIB depends on Fore-Common-MIB, Fore-TrapLog-MIB, and Fore-Switch-MIB for shared types and is deployed on ForeRunner ATM/SONET switches using redundant line protection. Engineers who need a Fore-Apsgroup-MIB download can load it to track working/protection line health and switchover events on these switches.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Fore-Apsgroup-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Fore Systems ForeRunner ATM switches with SONET APS line cards
Monitoring Examples
An operator polls apsWorkingLineState and apsProtectionLineState in the apsGroupTable to confirm both SONET lines are healthy (none), and watches for the apsSwitchOver trap; a signalFailure on the working line coinciding with an apsSwitchOver notification indicates the protection line has taken over and the working line needs repair.
What Can Be Monitored
- APS port admin/operational mode
- working vs. protection line signal state
- APS group switch commands and last command issued
- K1K2 byte protocol state (Rx/Tx channel and command)
- revertive switching mode and timer
- APS switchover notifications
