Category: Network Interfaces, SNA and Legacy Protocols, Vendor: 3Com

Description: Manages Chipcom (3Com) transparent bridging and network interconnection on legacy campus LAN equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CHIPTRNET-MIB?

CHIPTRNET-MIB is a legacy Chipcom (later acquired by 3Com) vendor MIB for managing Token Ring network interconnection and transparent bridging on Chipcom's campus LAN equipment (registered under the chipcom/chipmib02 OID tree). It exposes a Token Ring network-map state object and an olTRnetStatsTable recording, per network/ring segment, detailed Token Ring error counters such as line errors, burst errors, AC errors, lost-frame errors, congestion errors, frame-copied errors, token errors, and duplicate address detections. Its monitoring role is centered on hardware/link fault detection for Token Ring segments: rising values in these per-ring error counters reveal physical cabling problems, ring station faults, congestion, or duplicate MAC address conflicts on the legacy Token Ring network, while olTRnetMapState reflects overall network mapping/topology status. As a bridging MIB for Token Ring it likely coexists with standard dot1dBridge (BRIDGE-MIB) and Token-Ring interface MIB objects for the underlying interface and bridging model. It was deployed on Chipcom (3Com) transparent bridges and concentrators interconnecting Token Ring segments in legacy campus LAN environments. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the CHIPTRNET-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CHIPTRNET-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Chipcom (3Com) Token Ring bridge/concentrator, legacy campus LAN equipment

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls olTRnetStatsTable, indexed by olTRnetStatsNetID, watching olTRnetStatsLineErrors and olTRnetStatsBurstErrors for a spike that would indicate a failing cable segment or connector on that ring, while a rising olTRnetStatsDuplicateAddresses count would point to a duplicate MAC address conflict disrupting ring operation. olTRnetStatsCongestionErrors climbing alongside olTRnetStatsTokenErrors suggests the ring is overloaded or a station is mishandling the token, both classic legacy Token Ring fault patterns this MIB was designed to surface.

What Can Be Monitored

  • Token Ring line/burst/AC errors
  • lost-frame and congestion errors
  • token errors
  • duplicate address detections
  • network map state
