Category: Hardware and Environment, Network Interfaces

Description: Defines registered OBJECT IDENTIFIER values for identifying Ethernet chipsets, used by the EtherLike-MIB to identify MAC hardware.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring ETHER-CHIPSET-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is ETHER-CHIPSET-MIB?

ETHER-CHIPSET-MIB is an IETF-maintained registration module that assigns and records OBJECT IDENTIFIER values identifying specific Ethernet MAC chipsets, for use as values of the (now deprecated) dot3StatsEtherChipSet object defined in the standard EtherLike-MIB. It contains no device telemetry of its own; its sole purpose is to provide a historical, centralized registry of chipset identifiers that various IETF working groups assigned over time. Because dot3StatsEtherChipSet is deprecated, this MIB has essentially no role in modern hardware/software status monitoring beyond preserving legacy chipset-identity mappings for older agent implementations. Its dependency is explicit and direct on the EtherLike-MIB (dot3StatsEtherChipSet). It would only be encountered today on legacy Ethernet interface hardware or aging SNMP agents that still populate the deprecated chipset-identity object. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the ETHER-CHIPSET-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ETHER-CHIPSET-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • legacy Ethernet network interfaces

Monitoring Examples

This module contains only OBJECT IDENTIFIER registration values, not data tables, so there are no objects to poll for monitoring purposes. Historically, an agent would set dot3StatsEtherChipSet (from EtherLike-MIB) to one of the identifiers registered here to indicate which Ethernet MAC chipset was present on an interface, but this practice is deprecated in modern deployments.
