What Is CERENT-HC-RMON-MIB?

CERENT-HC-RMON-MIB is a Cisco (originally Cerent, acquired by Cisco for its ONS optical transport platforms) proprietary extension of the standard High-Capacity RMON MIB (HC-RMON-MIB, RFC 3273) tailored for optical/media-independent interfaces on ONS optical networking equipment. It exposes detailed layer-independent traffic quality counters such as bad CRC counts, truncated and too-long frames, link recoveries, and buffer-credit statistics used in distance-extension/buffer-to-buffer credit flow control for storage/SAN-over-optical links. Its monitoring value is squarely performance and fault counters at the physical/media layer: rising CRC error, truncated-frame, or link-recovery counts reveal a degrading optical link or fiber problem, while credit and distance-extension buffer counters reveal buffer-to-buffer credit starvation affecting throughput over long-distance optical circuits. As stated in its own description, it is explicitly a proprietary extension of the standard HC-RMON-MIB from RFC 3273, making that IETF MIB a direct and stated dependency. It is typically deployed on Cisco ONS optical transport platforms carrying high-capacity Ethernet or Fibre Channel traffic over extended distances. Engineers can download the CERENT-HC-RMON-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll cMediaIndependentTable/cMediaIndependentEntry to read cMediaIndependentInBadCRC and cMediaIndependentOutBadCRC alongside cMediaIndependentInFramesTruncated and cMediaIndependentInFramesTooLong to spot physical-layer errors on an optical interface. A rising cMediaIndependentLinkRecoveries count together with cMediaIndependentOutZeroCredits would reveal the link is repeatedly recovering from errors and running out of flow-control credits, a sign of marginal optical signal quality or a buffer-credit-starved long-haul circuit.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cMediaIndependentInBadCRC OID:

Select a Cisco ONS optical transport platform (formerly Cerent) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cMediaIndependentInBadCRC into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The total number of frames received on this interface which contained CRC error. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
