Category: DOCSIS and Cable, Vendor: ARRIS

Description: Monitors software performance measurements including throughput, latency, and packet processing statistics on ARRIS/Cadant CMTS.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CADANT-SW-MEAS-MIB?

CADANT-SW-MEAS-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from ARRIS/Cadant that exposes internal software performance and scale counters for the C4 CMTS, as stated directly in its description ('soft counts associated with software in the Arris C4 CMTS'). It reports aggregate counts of managed entities such as connected cable modems, bonded downstream/upstream devices, service flows, classifiers, ARP entries, IPv4/IPv6 routes, and multicast streams. Its monitoring value is centered on software/platform capacity and health: tracking cadantTotalDevices, cadantTotalServiceFlows, and cadantTotalClassifiers against known platform scale limits lets an operator detect when a CMTS chassis is approaching capacity or has suffered an unexpected drop in connected devices (indicating an outage). This is a proprietary Cadant/ARRIS measurement MIB with no stated dependency on external standard MIBs beyond general DOCSIS terminology. It is deployed by cable operators for capacity planning and health monitoring of CMTS head-end chassis, typically after completing a CADANT-SW-MEAS-MIB download to load the module's counters into their monitoring tools.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CADANT-SW-MEAS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • ARRIS/Cadant C4 CMTS

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll cadantTotalDevices and cadantDsBondedDevices/cadantUsBondedDevices to track how many cable modems are online and channel-bonded, and a sharp unexpected drop would indicate a chassis-wide or line-card outage. Watching cadantTotalServiceFlows and cadantTotalClassifiers against the platform's rated scale limits helps identify when the CMTS is nearing capacity, while cadantTotalArpEntries, cadantTotalIpv4Routes, and cadantTotalNdEntries/cadantTotalIpv6Routes reveal whether routing/ARP tables are growing abnormally, which can signal a routing loop or address-exhaustion issue. cadantDocsisMulticastStreams and cadantVideoMulticastStreams would additionally show video/multicast service load on the chassis.

What Can Be Monitored

  • total connected cable modems
  • bonded downstream/upstream device counts
  • total service flows
  • total classifiers
  • ARP and neighbor-discovery entry counts
  • multicast stream counts
