Category: DOCSIS and Cable

Description: Manages CableHome CTP (CableHome Topology Protocol) for residential LAN device discovery and management.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CABH-CTP-MIB?

CABH-CTP-MIB is part of the CableLabs CableHome specification suite, defining the CableHome Test Portal (CTP) used for diagnostic testing of residential LAN devices behind a cable modem gateway. It exposes objects that let a management station initiate and observe network connectivity tests (protocol, source/destination IP, packet size, timeout) from the perspective of the home gateway. Its primary monitoring value is operational/diagnostic rather than hardware health: it reports connection test status, packets sent, and completion results, effectively functioning as a remote ping/throughput diagnostic tool, and also supports resetting the portal to factory defaults. It builds on the broader CableHome MIB framework and relies on companion CableHome MIBs for device and WAN-side context. It is typically deployed by cable operators for remote troubleshooting of subscriber premises equipment (residential gateways/eMTAs). Engineers can download the CABH-CTP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CABH-CTP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • CableHome residential gateway
  • cable modem with router/eMTA functionality

Monitoring Examples

An operator can configure cabhCtpConnSrcIp, cabhCtpConnDestIp, cabhCtpConnProto, and cabhCtpConnPktSize to define a diagnostic test connection, then set cabhCtpConnControl to start it and poll cabhCtpConnStatus and cabhCtpConnPktsSent to see how the test progressed. Repeated failures or zero packets sent while cabhCtpConnStatus shows an error would indicate a LAN-side connectivity problem on the customer's home network. cabhCtpSetToFactory lets the operator reset the portal's test configuration back to defaults after diagnostics are complete.

What Can Be Monitored

  • diagnostic connection status
  • packets sent in test
  • test source/destination IP and protocol
  • connection timeout setting
  • connection speed
