Category: DOCSIS and Cable, Routing Protocols, Vendor: ARRIS

Description: Provides OSPF routing protocol extensions and status monitoring on ARRIS/Cadant CMTS platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CADANT-OSPF-MIB?

CADANT-OSPF-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from ARRIS/Cadant that extends and mirrors the IETF OSPF Version 2 MIB draft (draft-ietf-ospf-mib-update-05) to control and report on the OSPF routing protocol implementation within the Cadant CMTS's Virtual Router architecture. It exposes configuration objects for enabling OSPF on specific networks/interfaces (cadOspfNetworkEnableTable) along with route-count statistics broken out by route type, such as intra-area, inter-area, and external type-1/type-2 routes. Its monitoring value is primarily software/routing-configuration status: an administrator can confirm which IP networks and areas have OSPF enabled and track how many routes of each category are present in the routing table, which helps detect route flapping, routing table bloat, or a network failing to advertise into the correct OSPF area. As stated in the module description, it explicitly depends on and mirrors the IETF OSPFv2 MIB standard. It is deployed by cable operators running OSPF for IP routing between virtual routers on Cadant CMTS head-end equipment. Engineers can download the CADANT-OSPF-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CADANT-OSPF-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • ARRIS/Cadant C4 CMTS

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll cadOspfNetworkEnableTable/cadOspfNetworkEnableEntry to confirm cadOspfNetworkEnableIpaddress, cadOspfNetworkEnableWildcard, and cadOspfNetworkEnableAreaId are correctly configured for a virtual router's OSPF-enabled subnets, with cadOspfNetworkEnableRowStatus showing whether the entry is active. Watching cadOspfIntraArea, cadOspfInterArea, cadOspfExternalType1, and cadOspfExternalType2 route counts over time would reveal an unexpected drop in intra-area routes (suggesting an adjacency loss) or a spike in external routes (suggesting route redistribution misconfiguration) on the CMTS's virtual router.

What Can Be Monitored

  • OSPF-enabled network configuration
  • OSPF area assignment
  • intra-area route count
  • inter-area route count
  • external type-1/type-2 route counts
