What Is BW-BroadworksMediaServer?

BW-BroadworksMediaServer is a BroadSoft proprietary MIB covering the Media Server component of the BroadWorks VoIP/unified-communications platform, which handles media resources such as announcements, conferencing, and IVR media streams for hosted telephony services. It exposes objects grouped for compliance/conformance tracking (bwMSGroups, bwMSCompliancy) alongside the underlying resource utilization and active media session data the media server component tracks. Its monitoring value centers on software service health: tracking active media session counts and resource utilization on the media server lets an administrator detect when the media server is approaching capacity, which could cause call features like conferencing, announcements, or IVR prompts to fail or degrade for subscribers. It is one MIB within BroadSoft's larger BroadWorks MIB family, sharing common conventions across other BW-Broadworks* component MIBs (e.g., application server, call server). Monitoring Examples

An administrator would use the bwMSGroups conformance structure to identify which media-server-specific objects (such as active media session counts and resource utilization metrics) are supported by a given BroadWorks Media Server instance, then poll those runtime objects to see how many concurrent media sessions (conferences, announcements, IVR streams) are active. A rising active session count approaching the server's known resource capacity would reveal a risk of dropped or blocked media features for subscribers during peak call volume. Since bwMSGroups and bwMSCompliancy are primarily conformance/group definitions, the actual runtime counters they reference should be checked directly for utilization thresholds.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using msNoPortAvailableErrors OID:

Select a BroadSoft BroadWorks VoIP/UC application server as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type msNoPortAvailableErrors into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the number of 'no ports available' errors. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
