Category: VLAN and Bridging, Vendor: Foundry/Brocade

Description: Manages SPX (Simple Port eXtender) stack configuration and port extender status on Brocade switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BROCADE-SPX-MIB?

BROCADE-SPX-MIB manages the IEEE 802.1BR Stack Port eXtender (SPX) feature on Brocade FastIron ICX7750/ICX7450 switches, covering both global stack role configuration and per-unit port-extender status. It exposes global Controlling Bridge/Port Extender state plus configuration and operational tables for each unit participating in the SPX topology. It supports hardware/topology health monitoring directly -- brcdSPXConfigUnitState and brcdSPXOperUnitTable reveal whether individual port-extender units are provisioned and actually online, and the CB/PE role objects indicate whether the stack's control-plane relationship is correctly established. As an implementation of the IEEE 802.1BR standard, it typically coexists with Brocade's broader stacking/chassis management MIBs. It is deployed on FastIron ICX7750/ICX7450 switches used in an extended-edge, port-extender stacking architecture. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the BROCADE-SPX-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BROCADE-SPX-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Brocade FastIron ICX7750 switch
  • Brocade FastIron ICX7450 switch

Monitoring Examples

An admin checks brcdSPXGlobalConfigCBState and brcdSPXGlobalConfigPEState to confirm whether a given switch is acting as Controlling Bridge or Port Extender in the SPX topology. brcdSPXConfigUnitTable (brcdSPXConfigUnitIndex, brcdSPXConfigUnitPEName, brcdSPXConfigUnitType, brcdSPXConfigUnitState) is polled to verify each extender unit is correctly provisioned, while brcdSPXOperUnitTable (brcdSPXOperUnitIndex) shows live operational state -- a unit stuck in a non-operational state points to a failed or disconnected port extender needing physical attention.

What Can Be Monitored

  • controlling bridge / port extender role state
  • per-unit configuration status
  • per-unit operational state
  • port extender unit type and name
