Description: IETF IDR extension MIB for monitoring BGP-4 Autonomous System Confederation configuration and confederation peer relationships on routers (RFC 1965)
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is BGP-CONFED-MIB?
BGP-CONFED-MIB is an IETF (IDR working group) standards-based extension to the BGP-4 MIB, defined in RFC 1965, adding management objects specific to BGP Autonomous System Confederations. It exposes configuration-oriented data describing confederation membership and confederation peer relationships, layered on top of the base BGP-4 MIB's peer and routing objects. Rather than hardware, this MIB is a software/protocol-state monitoring module: it lets an operator confirm confederation configuration matches intended AS-path aggregation design and that confederation peers are correctly recognized, useful for troubleshooting unexpected AS-path lengths or route selection in large BGP deployments. It explicitly extends and depends on the standard BGP-4 MIB (and IETF's routing MIB framework) for its base peer/session objects. It's deployed on any BGP-speaking router, across vendors, that participates in BGP confederations to reduce full-mesh iBGP overhead within a large AS, in accordance with the BGP-CONFED-MIB RFC that originally defined this module.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BGP-CONFED-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer — applies to any BGP-speaking router
Monitoring Examples
No populated sample_objects were provided for this module, so no concrete object/table names can be cited from the input; the module's actual leaves (confederation identifier, confederation peer table) are defined in RFC 1965 itself rather than in the provided grounding data. In general terms, an operator would use this MIB's confederation peer table to verify that a router correctly recognizes fellow confederation members and treats their AS-path segments accordingly. An anomaly would show up as a confederation peer missing from the table or unexpected AS-path handling in routing decisions.
What Can Be Monitored
- BGP confederation configuration/membership
- confederation peer relationships
