Description: IETF IDR extension MIB that exposes BGP-4 Extended Communities attributes received with incoming routes on BGP-speaking routers

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BGP4-EXT-COMM-MIB?

BGP4-EXT-COMM-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF Inter-Domain Routing (IDR) working group extension to the standard BGP-4 MIB, adding visibility into the BGP Extended Communities path attribute carried on incoming routes. It belongs to the routing-protocol management category, exposing per-route extended-community attribute data rather than interface, environmental, or process-level data. Its monitoring role is protocol/software-state focused: it lets an operator confirm that route-policy-driving extended communities (such as route-target or origin markers) are being received and interpreted as expected by the BGP software on the router, which is useful for diagnosing route-policy or VPN route-leaking issues rather than hardware health. It explicitly depends on and extends the base BGP4-MIB (RFC 1657/4273 lineage), reusing its route table indexing. It is deployed on BGP-speaking core and edge routers, particularly in MPLS/VPN service-provider networks where extended communities drive VPN route distribution, consistent with the BGP4-EXT-COMM-MIB RFC that formally defines this IDR extension.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BGP4-EXT-COMM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • BGP-4 speaking routers

Monitoring Examples

No sample runtime objects were supplied for this module in the input, so specific table/object names cannot be cited from sample_objects; based on the module description, it would extend the bgp4PathAttrTable-style indexing with objects representing the extended community type and value received per prefix/peer. An operator would use such objects to verify that expected route-target extended communities are present on routes received from a given peer, revealing misconfigured VPN import/export policies. Because no sample_objects were given, no fabricated object names are used here.
