What Is AirDefense-airCommand-MIB?

AirDefense-airCommand-MIB is a vendor MIB from AirDefense, a wireless intrusion prevention system vendor later acquired by Motorola/Extreme Networks, covering the "airCommand" policy-enforcement and rogue-device containment component of its wireless IPS. It exposes an event table logging security and policy-enforcement events under the broader AirDefense products enterprise branch. It is a security/fault-event monitoring module — used to monitor the software-level status of wireless security enforcement, such as logged containment or policy-violation events, letting an admin see when rogue-device containment actions have fired, rather than any hardware sensor. It sits under the shared airDefense/airDefenseProducts enterprise OID branch alongside AirDefense's other wireless-IPS MIBs, implying it is part of a broader family of related modules for the same sensor/server platform. It is deployed with AirDefense wireless intrusion-prevention sensors and management servers protecting enterprise Wi-Fi networks from rogue access points and wireless attacks, where AirDefense-airCommand-MIB SNMP monitoring surfaces containment and policy-enforcement events as they fire.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in AirDefense-airCommand-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • AirDefense wireless intrusion prevention system (sensors/servers)

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll airCommandEventTable to retrieve the log of containment and policy-enforcement events generated by the AirDefense system. A spike in new entries in this table would indicate the airCommand component is actively detecting and countering rogue devices or wireless policy violations on the monitored network.

What Can Be Monitored

  • policy enforcement events
  • rogue device containment events
  • wireless security event log

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using airCommandEventCount OID:

Select an AirDefense (Motorola/Extreme) wireless intrusion prevention sensors/server (legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type airCommandEventCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the count of the Number of Events of this Priority since the Last Update. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the count changes from its expected baseline, since that would indicate the underlying set of items changed unexpectedly. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
