Organization: Siemens AG
Last Updated: 2013-06-25
Category: SNMP Framework, Vendor: Siemens
Description: Defines the Siemens industrial automation enterprise OID root hierarchy for SNMP-managed automation system components.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is AUTOMATION-SMI?
AUTOMATION-SMI is the top-level Structure-of-Management-Information (SMI) module for Siemens AG's Industry Automation Division, defining the root enterprise OID under which all of Siemens' industrial automation SNMP MIBs are organized. It does not itself define managed objects, tables, or traps; it is a registration/naming module that other Siemens automation MIBs import to anchor their own object trees. Because it carries no instrumented data, it has no direct role in reporting hardware or software status such as uptime, temperature, or CPU load — those are defined in the child MIBs branching from this root. Numerous downstream Siemens automation MIBs (e.g. for PLCs, industrial switches, and controllers) depend on this SMI module for their OID numbering. It is deployed wherever Siemens industrial automation SNMP-managed components (PLCs, HMI panels, industrial Ethernet switches) are present, serving purely as the organizational backbone of the vendor's AUTOMATION-SMI MIB tree.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in AUTOMATION-SMI. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Siemens industrial automation equipment (PLCs, controllers, industrial switches)
Monitoring Examples
This module contains no runtime data objects — it is purely an OID-tree root/registration module (the Siemens automation enterprise subtree) with no object or table definitions of its own. It exists solely so other Siemens automation MIBs can register their objects underneath a common, vendor-recognized OID branch. No monitoring scenario applies since there are no leaf objects to poll.
