Category: ATM

Description: Manages ATM Soft Permanent Virtual Circuits (Soft PVCs), covering endpoint configuration and call setup status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ATM-SOFT-PVC-MIB?

ATM-SOFT-PVC-MIB is an ATM Forum/IETF-derived standards MIB for managing ATM Soft Permanent Virtual Circuits (Soft PVCs), a hybrid ATM connection type that combines PVC-like provisioning with SVC-style dynamic call setup. It exposes configuration for soft PVC endpoints, including target address, VPI/VCI selection, and call setup parameters, along with counters and flags for call failure tracking. Its monitoring value is centered on fault detection for these ATM connections: it tracks the count of soft PVC call failures, the number of currently failing soft PVCCs and PVPCs, and can generate traps at a configurable notification interval when failures occur, directly surfacing connection-level fault status on ATM switching equipment. As an ATM Forum-aligned standard it works alongside other standard ATM MIBs (such as the base ATM-MIB) for complete circuit management. It is deployed in carrier and enterprise ATM switch networks using soft PVCs for resilient virtual circuit provisioning. When decoding a specific fault trap, an operator can consult the ATM-SOFT-PVC-MIB OID list to map the numeric identifier back to the exact soft-PVC object it represents.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ATM-SOFT-PVC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • ATM switch/router supporting Soft PVC (ATM Forum-compliant)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll atmSoftPvcCallFailures and atmSoftPvcCurrentlyFailingSoftPVccs/atmSoftPvcCurrentlyFailingSoftPVpcs to detect ATM soft virtual circuits that are currently unable to establish a call, indicating a routing or endpoint reachability problem. Examining atmSoftPVccTable/atmSoftPVccEntry, indexed by atmSoftPVccLeafReference, would show the atmSoftPVccTargetAddress, atmSoftPVccTargetVpi, and atmSoftPVccTargetVci for a specific failing circuit, while atmSoftPvcCallFailuresTrapEnable and atmSoftPvcNotificationInterval control whether and how often traps are sent for these failures.

What Can Be Monitored

  • soft PVC call failure count
  • currently failing soft PVCCs/PVPCs
  • target address, VPI/VCI for soft PVC endpoints
  • call failure trap enable/interval
