Category: VLAN and Bridging, Vendor: Allied Telesis

Description: Manages Per-VLAN Spanning Tree Protocol (PVST+) instance configuration and port state on Allied Telesis LAN switches.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is AT-PVSTPM-MIB?

AT-PVSTPM-MIB is Allied Telesis's private MIB for managing Per-VLAN Spanning Tree Protocol Plus (PVST+) instances on their LAN switches, allowing spanning tree topology to be tracked independently per VLAN rather than a single shared tree. It exposes bridge identifier information, per-VLAN topology change events, and per-port/per-VLAN transmit and receive state for the spanning tree protocol. Its monitoring value is on the software/protocol-state side - detecting topology changes and bridge role transitions that indicate network loops, link flaps, or reconvergence events rather than physical hardware faults. It depends conceptually on IEEE 802.1D/802.1w spanning tree standards, adapted here to Cisco-compatible PVST+ semantics as an Allied Telesis extension. It is deployed in enterprise LAN environments using Allied Telesis switches that interoperate with Cisco-style per-VLAN spanning tree, and administrators typically start with an AT-PVSTPM-MIB download to load it into their monitoring tools.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in AT-PVSTPM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Allied Telesis LAN switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would monitor pvstpmTopologyChangeVlan and the pvstpmEvents/pvstpmEventVariables to detect when a topology change occurs on a specific VLAN, then examine pvstpmRxPort, pvstpmRxVlan, and pvstpmTxVlan to identify which port and VLAN triggered the recalculation. Frequent topology change events combined with a shifting pvstpmBridgeId assignment would indicate an unstable link or a misconfigured redundant path causing repeated spanning tree reconvergence, a common cause of intermittent network outages.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-VLAN bridge identifier
  • topology change events per VLAN
  • spanning tree receive/transmit state per port and VLAN
  • PVST+ instance status
