Category: Device Management, Vendor: Ascend/Lucent

Description: Manages system resource utilization including memory and CPU on Ascend access equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ASCEND-RESOURCES-MIB?

ASCEND-RESOURCES-MIB is a proprietary Ascend module that manages system resource utilization data, including memory and CPU usage, on Ascend access equipment. It exposes runtime performance counters describing overall device resource consumption rather than per-interface or per-protocol data. Its monitoring purpose is squarely hardware/software health: tracking CPU load and memory utilization over time to detect a device approaching resource exhaustion, which is a common precursor to performance degradation or a device crash/reload. It has no direct IETF standard counterpart, though it covers similar ground to the generic HOST-RESOURCES-MIB, implemented instead as an Ascend-specific object tree. It is deployed across the full range of Ascend access and dial equipment as a general system-health monitoring module. Engineers can download the ASCEND-RESOURCES-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ASCEND-RESOURCES-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ascend access/dial equipment (general)

Monitoring Examples

sample_objects was empty for this module, so the following is inferred from its stated purpose rather than confirmed object names. An administrator would poll CPU utilization and free/used memory objects at regular intervals, and would treat a sustained high-CPU or low-free-memory reading as an early warning of an overloaded device before it experiences instability or a forced reload. This module is typically one of the first checked when a device shows sluggish response to SNMP or management traffic.

What Can Be Monitored

  • CPU utilization
  • memory utilization (free/used)
  • overall system resource load
