Category: SNMP Framework, Vendor: Ascend/Lucent

Description: Manages SNMP community strings, access control, and agent parameters on Ascend equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ASCEND-MIBSNMP-MIB?

ASCEND-MIBSNMP-MIB is Ascend Communications' proprietary MIB for managing the SNMP agent itself on Ascend access/routing equipment, covering community strings, access control, and general agent parameters. Unlike most device MIBs, it exposes management-plane configuration rather than device telemetry: the objects it defines control who is allowed to query the device via SNMP and with what privileges. Its hardware/software status relevance is limited to confirming the SNMP agent's own configuration is correct, such as whether community strings and access lists are set as expected, rather than reporting on CPU, memory, or environmental sensors. It extends the standard SNMPv1 community-based security model defined in RFC 1157 with Ascend-specific configuration objects. It was deployed on Ascend MAX/Pipeline-style remote-access concentrators and routers used in dial/ISDN access networks. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the ASCEND-MIBSNMP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ASCEND-MIBSNMP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ascend Communications remote access router/concentrator (e.g. MAX/Pipeline series)

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were provided for this module, so a concrete polling scenario with real object names cannot be constructed; based on the module's stated purpose, a typical use would be verifying configured SNMP community strings and access-control entries match the intended management policy rather than monitoring any traffic or hardware counters.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SNMP community string configuration
  • SNMP access control list entries
  • SNMP agent parameter settings
