What Is APPIAN-SERVICES-MIB?

APPIAN-SERVICES-MIB is a proprietary Appian Communications MIB defining Internet Access Service (IAS) and Transparent LAN Service (TLS) provisioning objects on its OSAP metro Ethernet/SONET platform. It exposes a service table describing each provisioned service's physical location (node, slot, port, channel), VLAN and trunk assignment, QoS template, and both administrative and operational status. This lets operators monitor service-level software configuration and operational health, detecting when a provisioned IAS or TLS circuit has gone operationally down despite being administratively enabled, or when QoS policy is misapplied. It is a self-contained vendor extension focused on service-layer state rather than depending heavily on standard IETF interface MIBs, though it conceptually parallels VLAN/service modeling in industry-standard bridge MIBs. It is deployed in metro Ethernet/SONET access networks run by carriers using Appian OSAP equipment to deliver business Internet access and transparent LAN services. Engineers can download the APPIAN-SERVICES-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in APPIAN-SERVICES-MIB. Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll acServiceTable, keyed by acServiceNodeId, acServiceSlot, acServicePort, and acServiceChannel, comparing acServiceAdminStatus against acServiceOpStatus to spot services that are enabled but not operationally up. Fields like acServiceVlanId, acServiceTrunkNumber, and acServiceQosTemplate reveal the VLAN and QoS configuration applied to each IAS (acIas) or TLS (acTls) service instance. A mismatch where acServiceOpStatus shows down while acServiceAdminStatus remains up would indicate a fault in the underlying transport circuit for that customer service.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using acServiceStatUpstreamFrames OID:

Select an Appian Communications OSAP SONET/optical access platform (legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type acServiceStatUpstreamFrames into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number frames transported from the access port to the network. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
