Description: Altiga (Cisco VPN 3000) PPPoE statistics MIB for monitoring PPPoE session discovery and establishment events.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ALTIGA-PPPOE-STATS-MIB?

ALTIGA-PPPOE-STATS-MIB is a vendor MIB from Altiga Networks (later Cisco VPN 3000 series) that models statistics for PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) session establishment on the device's interfaces. It exposes both global counters (active/total/max sessions) and a per-interface table tracking PPPoE discovery-stage events such as PADT (terminate) messages, generic and malformed packet errors, and PADI/PADR timeout counts. Its monitoring purpose is software/protocol-state health on each interface: an admin can see whether PPPoE sessions are establishing successfully or repeatedly timing out/erroring during discovery, which points to upstream access-concentrator or line problems. It depends on the standard PPPoE (RFC 2516) discovery protocol terminology for its counters but is otherwise a self-contained vendor statistics MIB. It is deployed on Cisco/Altiga VPN 3000 concentrators used as PPPoE clients or servers in broadband/remote-access deployments. Engineers can download the ALTIGA-PPPOE-STATS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ALTIGA-PPPOE-STATS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco/Altiga VPN 3000 Series Concentrator

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls alPPPoEStatsActiveSessions and alPPPoEStatsMaxSessions to see how close the device is to its session capacity, and walks alPPPoEStatsIfTable/alPPPoEStatsIfEntry by alPPPoEStatsIfIndex to check per-interface alPPPoEStatsIfPADITimeouts and alPPPoEStatsIfPADRTimeouts. A rising count of alPPPoEStatsIfMalformedPacketsRx or alPPPoEStatsIfGenericErrorsRx on one interface would point to a faulty upstream PPPoE access concentrator or cabling issue on that link. alPPPoEStatsIfPADTRx/Tx counts help confirm sessions are being torn down cleanly rather than dropping abruptly.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active/total/max PPPoE sessions
  • per-interface PADT rx/tx counts
  • PADI/PADR discovery timeouts
  • generic errors received
  • malformed packets received

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using alPPPoEStatsTotalSessions OID:

Select a Cisco (Altiga) VPN 3000 Series Concentrator (legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type alPPPoEStatsTotalSessions into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the total Sessions since last reset. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
