What Is ALCATEL-IND1-VIRTUAL-FLOW-CONTROL-MIB?

ALCATEL-IND1-VIRTUAL-FLOW-CONTROL-MIB is an Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch MIB for IEEE 802.1Qbb Priority-based Flow Control (PFC), which allows lossless, per-traffic-class flow control on Ethernet links commonly used for converged/DCB and FCoE-style data-center traffic. It exposes WRED (Weighted Random Early Detection) profile tables per traffic-class color (green/yellow), including admin state, minimum/maximum thresholds, maximum drop probability, and gain settings used to manage congestion before PFC pause frames are triggered. Its monitoring value is performance/congestion-management status: operators track whether WRED profiles are active and whether threshold/drop-probability settings are producing the intended congestion-avoidance behavior, since misconfigured thresholds can cause unwanted pause-frame storms or packet loss on a supposedly lossless class. It is built on the IEEE 802.1Qbb PFC standard together with WRED congestion-avoidance concepts rather than being a purely proprietary mechanism. It is deployed on OmniSwitch switches used in converged data-center fabrics carrying storage (FCoE/iSCSI) traffic alongside standard Ethernet traffic. An operator would poll alaVfcWREDProfileTable/alaVfcWREDProfileEntry for a given alaVfcWRPId, checking alaVfcWRPAdminState and alaVfcWRPName to confirm the expected WRED profile is active on a traffic class. Comparing alaVfcWRPGreenMinThreshold/alaVfcWRPGreenMaxThreshold and alaVfcWRPGreenMaxDropProbability against alaVfcWRPYellowMinThreshold/alaVfcWRPYellowMaxThreshold would reveal whether the yellow (more congested) class is being dropped more aggressively than green as intended. If drop probabilities are miscalibrated, this could show up as excessive discard on a supposedly lossless FCoE class or PFC pause storms propagating congestion upstream.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using alaVfcQInstancePacketsDropped OID:

Select an Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise OmniSwitch switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type alaVfcQInstancePacketsDropped into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports non-WRED dropped packet count. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
