Description: Alcatel OmniSwitch UDP relay (IP helper) MIB for managing broadcast-to-unicast forwarding for DHCP and other protocols.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ALCATEL-IND1-UDP-RELAY-MIB?

ALCATEL-IND1-UDP-RELAY-MIB is an Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch proprietary MIB for the UDP Relay (IP helper) feature, which forwards broadcast UDP requests such as BOOTP/DHCP across VLAN boundaries to a configured server. It exposes a per-next-hop statistics table tracking packets transmitted and received, along with counters for specific error/violation conditions: invalid agent information option from the server, maximum-hops violations, forward-delay violations, agent-information violations, and invalid gateway IP. Its monitoring focus is software/protocol-relay health: a rising error counter directly indicates DHCP relay requests are being dropped rather than forwarded, which would manifest as clients failing to obtain IP addresses. It builds on the standard BOOTP/DHCP relay-agent concept (including DHCP option 82) rather than introducing a new relay protocol. It is deployed on OmniSwitch access/aggregation switches acting as DHCP relay agents between end-user VLANs and a central DHCP server. Engineers can download the ALCATEL-IND1-UDP-RELAY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ALCATEL-IND1-UDP-RELAY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch access/aggregation switches

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll iphelperStatTable/iphelperStatEntry for a given iphelperStatsNextHopIpAddr, comparing iphelperTxToNextHop against iphelperRxFromClient to confirm relay traffic volume is as expected. A climbing iphelperMaxHopsViolation or iphelperForwDelayViolation counter would indicate DHCP requests are being discarded because they exceeded the configured iphelperMaxHops or iphelperForwDelay threshold, explaining reports of clients failing to lease an address. A rise in iphelperInvalidGatewayIP or iphelperAgentInfoViolation would point to a misconfigured relay gateway or Option 82 mismatch between the switch and DHCP server.

What Can Be Monitored

  • DHCP/BOOTP relay packet counters (tx/rx)
  • max-hops violation count
  • forward-delay violation count
  • agent-information (Option 82) violation count
  • invalid gateway IP count

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using iphelperRxFromClient OID:

Select an Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise OmniSwitch switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type iphelperRxFromClient into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. This keeps track of the number of packets recieved from the client. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
