Category: RMON

Description: Extends RMON with remote polling capabilities for 3Com network probes and monitors.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is A3COM0019-RMON-REMOTE-POLL?

A3COM0019-RMON-REMOTE-POLL is a 3Com enterprise MIB that extends the standard IETF RMON framework with a remote-polling capability, letting a 3Com network probe or switch actively poll other network elements on the operator's behalf. It exposes polling job configuration (target address, protocol, timeout, retry attempts, period) plus the timestamps and results of the most recent poll request and reply. Its monitoring value is around software/service-level health checking rather than the local device's own hardware: it lets an NMS confirm whether a remote target is reachable and responsive, and remPollLastRequest/remPollLastReply/remPollInformation reveal whether recent polls succeeded, timed out, or errored. It builds directly on the IETF RMON MIB (RFC 2819) conventions and is meant to run on a 3Com RMON-capable probe or switch. Typical deployment is a 3Com switch or standalone RMON probe configured to periodically test reachability of critical remote hosts or routers. Engineers can download the A3COM0019-RMON-REMOTE-POLL file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in A3COM0019-RMON-REMOTE-POLL. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • 3Com network probes/switches supporting RMON remote polling

Monitoring Examples

An admin populates remPollTable/remPollTableEntry with a target remPollAddress and remPollProtocol at a given remPollPeriod, then checks remPollLastReply and remPollInformation to see whether the last attempt succeeded. If remPollLastRequest keeps advancing while remPollLastReply stops updating, that reveals the remote target has become unreachable, indicating a network fault or the far-end device being down. remPollAttempts and remPollTimeout let the admin tune how many retries occur before a target is declared unreachable.

What Can Be Monitored

  • remote target reachability/poll result
  • poll request and reply timestamps
  • poll timeout and retry configuration
  • poll period/frequency
  • polled target address and protocol
