Description: Manages ZyXEL Ethernet OAM 802.3ah link monitoring and fault signaling on point-to-point Ethernet links.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is ZYXEL-OAM-MIB?
ZYXEL-OAM-MIB is a ZyXEL enterprise MIB covering the subtree for Ethernet OAM (802.3ah), a protocol providing link-level Operations, Administration, and Maintenance capabilities such as remote fault signaling, link monitoring, and remote loopback on point-to-point Ethernet links. It exposes configuration (OAM mode, enabled features) and operational/status data such as peer OAM discovery state and reported fault conditions. This makes it a genuine fault/hardware-link monitoring MIB: administrators use it to detect degraded or failed physical links, including "dying-gasp" events signaling imminent link loss, that standard interface counters might not surface as quickly. It builds on the IEEE 802.3ah OAM standard and the device's IF-MIB interface indexing for the ports it monitors. It is deployed on ZyXEL switches at the edge of metro Ethernet or fiber access networks, where OAM monitors the health of point-to-point links to customer premises or aggregation nodes. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the ZYXEL-OAM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ZYXEL-OAM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- ZyXEL managed switch (metro Ethernet/fiber edge)
Monitoring Examples
No sample objects were provided, but a MIB of this kind typically defines an OAM discovery/status table per port showing OAM operational state, peer capability, and any received OAM events. An administrator would poll this table to detect a dying-gasp or critical-event flag from a remote device, signaling an imminent or occurred link/power failure on the far end before a full interface-down state is otherwise detected.
What Can Be Monitored
- OAM discovery/operational state per port
- peer OAM capability
- dying gasp / critical event flags
- OAM fault event log
