Category: ZyXEL OAM and Monitoring

Description: Manages ZyXEL forwarding database for MAC address table entries, aging, and static address configuration.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ZYXEL-FDB-MIB?

This MIB belongs to the ZyXEL switch family and covers the forwarding database (FDB), the internal MAC address table that a switch uses to determine which port to forward traffic to for a given destination MAC address. It exposes objects for viewing learned dynamic MAC address entries, configuring static address entries, and controlling the MAC address aging time. This MIB is used primarily to monitor switching software behavior: verifying that expected devices' MAC addresses are learned on the correct ports, that static entries remain correctly pinned, and that the aging timer is set appropriately, which helps diagnose issues like MAC flapping, incorrect port assignment, or unexpectedly large address tables. It builds on the standard forwarding infrastructure typically also represented by the IETF BRIDGE-MIB, complementing rather than replacing that standard table with ZyXEL-specific controls. It is typically deployed in enterprise or SMB LAN switches for troubleshooting connectivity issues and auditing which devices are attached to which ports, and administrators can obtain a ZYXEL-FDB-MIB download to load directly into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ZYXEL-FDB-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • ZyXEL LAN switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll the FDB entries to see which MAC address is currently associated with a given port and VLAN, useful when tracking down a device that appears to have moved or a suspected MAC-spoofing situation. If the same MAC address appears to flap rapidly between two different ports in successive polls, that indicates a loop or duplicate MAC condition on the network. Checking the configured aging time also helps explain why a disconnected device's entry persists longer or shorter than expected in the table.

What Can Be Monitored

  • learned MAC address per port/VLAN
  • static MAC address entries
  • MAC address aging time
  • MAC flapping/duplicate detection
