Category: ZyXEL OAM and Monitoring

Description: Covers configuration of ZyXEL port mirroring, which duplicates traffic from monitored ports onto a designated analyzer port.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ZYXEL-MIRROR-MIB?

This is a ZyXEL vendor-specific MIB dedicated to port mirroring (SPAN-like functionality), which copies traffic from one or more monitored source ports to a designated analyzer/destination port for capture and analysis. It exposes configuration objects defining which ports are being mirrored, in which direction (ingress/egress/both), and which port receives the mirrored traffic. Its monitoring value is primarily enabling other monitoring workflows rather than exposing performance data itself: administrators configure and verify mirror sessions here before attaching a packet capture tool or intrusion detection sensor to the analyzer port, and can confirm mirror session state to troubleshoot why expected traffic isn't appearing on a capture. It has no significant dependency on other MIBs beyond standard interface indexing conventions used to reference mirrored ports. It is typically deployed by network administrators setting up traffic capture or IDS/IPS taps on ZyXEL switches in enterprise LANs. Engineers can download the ZYXEL-MIRROR-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ZYXEL-MIRROR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • ZyXEL switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator configures a mirror session to copy all traffic from a suspicious host's access port to an analyzer port where a packet capture tool is attached, then verifies the mirror configuration object confirms the correct source and destination port binding. If the capture tool shows no traffic despite an active session on the monitored host, checking the mirror direction (ingress/egress) setting in this MIB would be the first troubleshooting step. No sample objects were present in the source extract, so exact object names cannot be confirmed here.

What Can Be Monitored

  • mirror session source port
  • mirror destination/analyzer port
  • mirror direction (ingress/egress)
  • mirror session enable state
