Category: Video and Virtualization

Description: Defines common objects shared across multiple VideoTele or virtual terminal management MIBs.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is VTCOMMON-MIB?

VTCOMMON-MIB is not an Extreme Networks or Bay Networks module and does not model video-conferencing or virtual-terminal objects as its name might suggest — the source file is explicitly a VocalTec Communications MIB (vocaltec OBJECT IDENTIFIER ::= { enterprises 2516 }) for managing VocalTec's early VoIP gateway and gatekeeper server line. It defines a single serverOpModeTable indexed by vtServerType (other, vtgw for VocalTec gateway, vgk for voice gatekeeper) and vtServerIPAddress, exposing a writable vtCommand object (rma-start, rma-kill, rma-reboot, outOfServiceGracefully, shutdownGracefully, etc.) to remotely control a server and a read vtCurrentOpMode object reporting its lifecycle state (loading, inService, goingOutOfService, maintenance, configurationFault, and others). It also defines six TRAP-TYPEs (serverInService, serverOutOfService, serverShuttingDown, serverMaintenance, serverConfigurationFault, serverInTransition) that notify a manager whenever a VocalTec server's operational mode changes. This makes it useful for monitoring the availability and command/control state of VoIP gateway or gatekeeper servers in a VocalTec telephony deployment rather than any networking-hardware interface. It is deployed alongside VocalTec's H.323-era VoIP gateway/gatekeeper software, and network operators can download the VTCOMMON-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser when managing that equipment.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VTCOMMON-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • VocalTec VoIP gateway/gatekeeper servers (not Extreme Networks or Bay Networks hardware, despite the module's common naming)

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls vtCurrentOpMode for a given vtServerType/vtServerIPAddress pair to confirm a VocalTec gateway is inService, and subscribes to the serverOutOfService and serverConfigurationFault traps; receipt of serverConfigurationFault without a subsequent return to inService indicates the VoIP gateway or gatekeeper has a persistent configuration problem taking it out of service.

What Can Be Monitored

  • server operational mode (loading/inService/maintenance/etc.)
  • remote command execution status (start/kill/reboot)
  • in-service vs. out-of-service transitions
  • configuration fault notifications
  • server type classification (gateway vs. gatekeeper)

RFC description

Vendor-specific common MIB for Extreme/Bay Networks Virtual Trunk technology; defines shared management objects for VT implementations across platforms.

Start monitoring VocalTec VoIP gateway/gatekeeper servers (server operational-mode/command-control status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
