Description: Defines SNMP agent capabilities, documenting which versions of VMware MIB modules are supported by specific versions of ESXi, vCenter Server, and NSX.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is VMWARE-AGENTCAP-MIB?
VMWARE-AGENTCAP-MIB is a VMware AGENT-CAPABILITIES conformance module that documents which versions of VMware's various MIB modules are supported by specific releases of ESXi, vCenter Server, and NSX. Rather than modeling runtime data, it enumerates supported object groups per product version, which management stations use to determine feature/version compatibility when polling a VMware SNMP agent. As a conformance module it carries essentially no monitorable hardware or software status data itself, its function is purely declarative. It depends entirely on the full set of companion VMware MIBs (e.g., host, VM, and NSX-related modules) whose object groups it references by version. It's relevant when integrating VMware ESXi/vCenter/NSX SNMP agents into an NMS to confirm which MIB features a given deployment exposes. Engineers can download the VMWARE-AGENTCAP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VMWARE-AGENTCAP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- VMware ESXi host
- VMware vCenter Server
- VMware NSX
Monitoring Examples
This is a conformance/AGENT-CAPABILITIES module, the lone sample object vmwEsxCapability is itself a capability declaration rather than a data object, so there is no runtime monitoring scenario; its purpose is solely to state which companion VMware MIB object groups a given ESXi/vCenter/NSX version implements.
